Is Whoopi Goldberg Jewish? Details about his real name and religion
Whoopi Goldberg’s recent misstep on “The View” in which she said the Holocaust “wasn’t about race” got her into hot water online.
Goldberg has come under fire for comments she appears to have taken to heart, apologizing and bringing the CEO of the Anti Defamation League on her show to discuss how race factored into the Holocaust.
His answer, however, could not save her from the two-week suspension she has since received.
Goldberg’s comments also have people looking back at Goldberg’s past comments about Judaism, including times when she claimed to be Jewish herself.
All of this has left some puzzled as to what exactly Goldberg is. connection with the Jewish community.
Is Whoopi Goldberg Jewish?
Goldberg claimed to be Jewish and faced backlash for calling herself by the pejorative term “Jewish American princess”, but she doesn’t seem to have clarified what exactly that means since she has no Jewish lineage nor does she appear to practice Judaism.
Whoopi Goldberg never converted to Judaism.
By her own admission, Goldberg is not interested in going to the Temple or reading the Jewish scriptures.
She said in a 2016 interview, “I just know I’m Jewish. I don’t practice anything. I don’t go to the temple, but I remember the holidays. Religion is a lot of work, it’s exhausting. So I keep it simple, I have a pretty good relationship with God. We are talking.”
Of course practicing the Judaic faith is not the only way for a person to be Jewish, there are many people who are of Jewish descent and consider themselves part of the Jewish people but do not themselves practice Judaism.
However, this identifier does not apply to Goldberg either.
Whoopi Goldberg does not appear to have Jewish ancestry.
the best information available online comes from the mid-2000s when a DNA test determined that Goldberg’s heritage was 92% African and 8% European with apparently no specific indication of Jewish ancestry.
All that said, Goldberg insisted, without proof, that there were Jews in his ancestry and claims to feel a connection to Israel.
“I feel a real connection there, but also with Palestine. We are one people, we really are,” she said.
It’s hard to say how “valid” Goldberg’s claim that she is Jewish is given the confusion of history and definitions.
Whoopi Goldberg’s real name is Caryn Johnson.
Many might assume that Goldberg has Jewish ancestry based on his last name, but even that is not accurate.
Goldberg was originally born Caryn Johnson, but over the years she’s taken on the name “Whoopi Goldberg,” which apparently comes from somewhere on her mother’s side of the family.
Goldberg said of his unique name situation, “My mom didn’t call me Whoopi, but Goldberg is my name, it’s part of my family, part of my heritage. Just like being black.
While part of the story is buried in Goldberg’s personal life and beyond the reach of any reasonable public inquiry, Goldberg spoke at length about his experiences with Judaism and the Jewish people while pretending that she herself is Jewish.
Goldberg says her mother once told her that their original last name was “not Jewish enough” for her to succeed in the industry.
It also reflects another deeply troubling aspect of Goldberg’s view of Jews and Judaism, as it suggests that she chose to adopt a Jewish identity to benefit from what she perceives to be the privileges that would come with a name. Jew without actually doing any research on how best to advocate for the Jewish people.

However, the question must be asked, does it make sense that Whoopi Goldberg shares the same socio-ancestral label as a victim of the holocaust? Their descendants? A rabbi?
