Three Brooklyn Men Accused of Assaulting Jews, Forcing Them to Say “Free Palestine” | JNS
Three men in Brooklyn, New York, have been charged with two incidents of hate crimes targeting religious Jews.
Kings Country District Attorney Eric Gonzalez identified the defendants as Daniel Shaukat, 20, of Bensonhurst; Haider Anjam, 21, of Midwood; and 19-year-old Ashan Azad, also from Midwood.
According to Brooklyn Daily Eagle, tThe men faced a 68-count indictment that included third degree assault as a hate crime; second degree threat as a hate crime; third degree assault; criminal mischief; and criminal obstruction of breathing and related charges.
According to a police investigation, the defendants stopped their blue Toyota Camry outside a synagogue in Borough Park on May 22 and shouted “Free Palestine, kill all Jews!” Shaukat and Anjam then allegedly got out of the car and approached two Jewish men dressed in religious clothing. They say again the same anti-Semitic statements before knocking on the synagogue door, as children and adults hid inside. Anjam would also have kicked the rear-view mirror of a car parked nearby.
Later that day, the trio arrested two other Jewish men on their way home from a synagogue in Brooklyn’s Kensington neighborhood. Anjam and Shaukat got out of the Toyota again, approached the two victims and repeatedly demanded that they say “Free Palestine”. They allegedly hit one of the victims several times and strangled him, and Azad allegedly hit one of the victims on the head.
Anjam also pursued the victims with a wooden cricket bat as they fled. A Lyft driver who watched the incident unfold offered to assist the victims and took them to safety, the investigation said.
Anjam was arraigned last week, Shaukat was arraigned on Monday and Azad will be arraigned at a later date, reported the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. They have been released on $ 4,000 to $ 5,000 bail and are due to return to court on September 9. If found guilty, they face a maximum sentence of one to four years in prison.
